Today, I am going to be sharing how to take an art journal page design and translate it into a greeting card! I get asked a lot about my art journal videos if the designs can be made into cards. The answer is yes! It's all about making sure to scale the design down to size accordingly. Making a mixed media art journal into a card can be a fun challenge to do!
The same principle applies the other way around. You can turn a card idea into an art journal page design, or even a scrapbook layout. Just imagine that you are pinching and zooming out, as you would on your touch screen! You are basically enlarging the elements and making them appear larger and more spread out!
For my project post, I made a 6 x 8 art journal page and an A2 card using the Altenew and Pinkfresh Studio Celebrate Collaboration. Have you ever tried art journaling or mixed media on patterned paper? It is a lot of fun working on a background, as it has already been pre-done for you. And because of this, the best part is that you don't even have to think about a color palette for your project!
I made a video tutorial on how I made this mixed media art journal and card, side by side. This is to show my most natural way of working on a project! I will often work on more than one project at the same time. And when I create for myself, I usually don't finish a project in one sitting. As a result, this means that I can make time to be creative every day for short periods of time.
For more detailed instructions with a voice-over, watch how I made this mixed media art journal page in the video below! Feel free to watch it on Altenew’s YouTube Channel HERE:
I hope that you enjoyed my video! Here are a few more details and close-ups of the card and art journal page. Firstly, I lightly stamped the Checkerboard Stamp set making sure to dab away some of the ink. This made sure that there weren't any harsh lines on the image. Secondly, the blue drips are made from paint from the Watercolor 36 Pan Set. I love how they look against the scrapbook paper.
The floral image on the card was made with the Celebrate Us Stamp and Die Set. I love that the Alphabet Stencil is peeking from behind the flower, and that the Embossing Paste contrasts really well over the background of the scrapbook paper.
For the art journal page, I used the sentiments from the Celebrate Today stamp set. The theme for my journal page was gratitude. I feel that having an “attitude of gratitude” is important for me to stay grounded and to remind myself that there is so much in life to be grateful for. I also added a few extra die-cut leaves from the Ephemera Set to help bulk up the floral spray a little bit.
The stamped floral image on the mixed media art journal page is from the Celebrate Today which I cut out with the matching Die Set. The word “thankful” is from the Celebrate Us Die Set which I die cut and double layered black card stock to give it a more substantial feel.
I added the stamped flowers onto my journal with foam tape and added a “nest” of metallic thread behind them.
I hope that you all enjoyed the video tutorial on how I made a mixed media art journal and card using the same design and supplies.
