3 Mixed Media Projects with Ink Blending Tools!

by May Sukyong Park

Hi Friends,

Today I have a video tutorial featuring the Small and the Large Ink Blending Brushes. I will show you 3 mixed media projects with the ink blending tools and show you some tips and tricks along the way.

The ink blending brushes now come in two sizes: a Large and Small. The large one is about 1 3/4″ wide and the smaller brushes come in a pack of 4 and are 1″ across. This makes them perfect for spotlighting areas and using them to ink smaller areas.

The brushes themselves are very comfortable to hold and the bristles are durable, but soft enough to hold inks very well.

For my projects I made a 6″x 8″ mixed media art journal page and two cards with softly blended backgrounds.

Stenciled Flowers

I used the Beauty Within Stamp Set along with the matching Die and Stencil Set to create these stunning floral elements. As the Stencils and Stamp Set are meant to be layered together, you can use to create many different combinations.

I used the same ink colours to make sure that everything looked cohesive. As I already had all my supplies out, I made lots of flowers and leaves to use. The Crisp Dye Ink colors I used were: Fresh Lemon, Starlight, Tide Blue, Magenta, and Fuchsia.

Tip: To clean your brushes use a baby wipe or wash gently with soap and water. Alternatively, you can clean using a damp microfibre cloth too!

To start off, blend Fuchsia and Tide Blue Crisp Dye Ink on a thick piece of card stock with the Large Ink Blending Brush. Use the Leaf Bed Stencil to blend Fresh Lemon Crisp Dye Ink with the Brush.

Tip: If you find that your brush is catching in delicate designed stencils, move the brush in the direction of the design so that the bristles don't lift the stencil!

Add Embossing Paste through the Woven Stencil on opposite corners of the art journal page. This helps to lift up the colors a little more and adds white space. After the paste has dried, add splatters with black ink!

After deciding on the placement of the flowers, stamp down a sentiment from the Beauty Within stamp set with Obsidian Pigment Ink. Finish the art journal page by adding the flowers and leaves with foam tape.

Blended Background Cards

To create the backgrounds of the cards, softly blend the backgrounds using the same inks as on the art journal page and layered over them using the Leaf Bed and Woven Stencils.

I added splatters with black ink to the background, and let the panels dry. Add sentiments from the same stamp set and mount on to card blanks. To finish add the flowers and leaves as well with foam tape!
