Hello, crafty friends! Today we welcome Nandini Karmarkar back again to the Altenew Mixed Media blog as our August Guest Designer. She will be sharing some gorgeous handmade bookmarks with us today! Let's hear it from Nandini!
Get to know Nandini
Greetings from India! Nandini Karmarkar here, from the sunny beaches of Goa!
I have always been creative. I studied Textile Design in college and eventually worked as a costume designer in the film industry. When my daughter was born, I became a stay-at-home mom. But my passion for crafting was still alive! I opted to train as a craft teacher and this is where I got introduced to paper crafting. I started with quilling and eventually discovered card making.
I have been a fan of Altenew right from their first release in April 2014. When the Educator Program was launched, I applied very hesitantly. Imagine my surprise when I was selected! I completed my training in March 2018. The journey leading to the certification was amazing! I feel it really changed me as a crafter! Even today, I enjoy participating in the Altenew Academy classes and expanding my knowledge.
Altenew has opened up new opportunities for me. I have regularly contributed videos to the Craft Your Life Virtual Retreats. I have also been invited as a guest designer to the various blog hops on the Altenew blog.
Nandini's Handmade Bookmarks
My family loves to read. Our house is filled with books, and one of our favorite activities is hanging out at the library. So I decided to create bookmarks stamped with the wonderful sentiments included in the Altenew sets.
These handmade bookmarks are also great scrap busters, as each requires small pieces of cardstock. And they go very quickly, especially if you use the large stamps and the coordinating stencils to create them.
I used the Botanical Bookmark die set for the base. For the first set of bookmarks, I used the stamps and simple coloring stencils from the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Florescence.
The stamp set has two large corner images, which I stamped on ivory cardstock with Permanent Black Crisp Dye Ink. I used the coordinating simple coloring stencil to color the images using the following Crisp Dye Inks – Firefly, Olive, Coral Berry, Crimson, Puffy Heart, Purple Wine, Cosmic Berry, Chamomile, and Snapdragon. The ink blending was done using the Small Ink Blending Tools and the Mini Ink Blending Brushes. I am a huge fan of these two sets, as they give me an amazing degree of control over my ink blending!
Once my coloring was done, I simply cut up the image into smaller panels and adhered them to the pre-cut bookmarks.
I used the sentiment from the Craft Your Life Project Kit: Seasonal Blooms for the bookmark at the top. For the lower one, I used the sentiment from the Bird of Paradise Stamp Set.
The sentiment for this bookmark is from the Bird of Paradise Stamp Set.
I used the Build-A-Garden: Magnificent Branch stamp and simple coloring stencils for the second set of handmade bookmarks.
I stamped the large stamp on a piece of ivory cardstock with Permanent Black Crisp Dye Ink and colored it with the following Crisp Dye Inks – Firefly, Olive, Coral Berry, Velvet, Puffy Heart, Purple Wine, Cosmic Berry, Chamomile, Rocky Shore, Milk Chocolate and Almond Butter. I used the Mini Ink Blending Brushes for the ink blending.
I love the sentiments in the Build-A-Garden: Magnificent Branch stamp set. I used two of them on these bookmarks.
The sentiment on the top bookmark is from the Build-A-Garden: Magnificent Branch stamp set. The sentiment on the lower bookmark is from the Bird of Paradise Stamp Set.
Here is a look at all the bookmarks.
I hope you found these handmade bookmarks inspiring and will give them a try. These ideas will work well for mini note cards or tags as well.
I would love to know your ideas on which Altenew stamp sets you can use for this technique. Please let me know in the comments below!

Beautiful bookmarks for those who (like me) get a great deal of satisfaction holding and reading an actual book.
